Meet Sucheta Shah: Turning Personal Challenges into Community Service

My name is Sucheta (Kulkarni) Shah. I was born and raised in the Phoenix area. I have resided in the Cave Creek Unified School District for over 25 years. I am a single mother, educator, entrepreneur, and longtime volunteer who believes that some of the most meaningful work happens when we turn personal challenges into opportunities to help others.

I moved to the Cave Creek area in 2001 and have spent much of my adult life raising my two children, building a career in higher education, starting businesses, and serving my community. My daughter graduated from Cave Creek High School in 2022, and my son is entering his senior year. As a working mother, I have often balanced family responsibilities, teaching college courses, volunteering at school events, and pursuing professional goals. Those experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of strong community connections.

Like many parents, I expected to volunteer in the classroom per the teacher’s requests. Instead, a challenge our family faced changed the course of my involvement in education and community service.

When my son entered kindergarten, he had severe food allergies. We requested a 504 Plan to help ensure his safety at school, but the request was denied. At first, I was disappointed but understood that food allergies had only recently been recognized under disability protections, and accommodations were still evolving. What I remember most, however, was the fear. Every day, I worried about whether my son would be safe at school, especially during kindergarten and first grade when he was too young to advocate for himself.

As the years passed and additional requests were denied, another parent and I found ourselves taking turns chaperoning classroom parties, birthday celebrations, book clubs, and field trips. If one of us was not there, our sons often could not safely participate. We became responsible for ensuring our children could enjoy the same experiences as their classmates.

While the situation was frustrating, it also inspired me to become more involved. I became a room parent for every one of my son’s homeroom classes through sixth grade. What began as a way to keep my son safe grew into an opportunity to support other students with food allergies and help create inclusive classroom experiences. I discovered that I genuinely loved being involved in the schools and working alongside teachers, staff, and families.

Over the years, my volunteer roles expanded. I served as a Reading Corner volunteer, Battle of the Books coach, Mini Museum parent volunteer, PTO Chair and Teacher Liaison at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School, Treasurer and President at Sonoran Trails Middle School PTO, Vice Chair of the Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation, and currently Co-President of the Cave Creek High School PTO.

More recently, I discovered multiple student rights were being violated, including my son’s, and worked with a small group of mothers and district employees to bring light to the administrators who were behind this. We brought the proof to the district, and now these administrators will no longer be in our district. I am proud of the factual information we were able to gather to protect students and improve the quality of our district.

Education has also been central to my professional life. For over a decade, I have taught business courses as a college instructor. I currently teach at New England College and the University of Arizona Global Campus and previously taught at Excelsior College. I enjoy helping students connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences and preparing them for their careers.

Outside of teaching, I am the founder of SourceCivis LLC, a consulting firm that helps educational institutions evaluate, improve, and implement procurement and vendor management processes. Throughout my career, I have also worked in university procurement and recruitment, experiences that have given me insight into how organizations operate and how thoughtful processes can improve outcomes.

I earned my MBA in 2015 and hold certifications in Six Sigma, Project Management, Ethics, and Change Management. While I am proud of those accomplishments, I am most proud of the relationships I have built through years of volunteering and serving my community.

As my son’s final year in high school approaches, I find myself reflecting on the journey that began with a worried parent trying to keep her child safe. What started as a challenge became a calling to advocate for students, support educators, and contribute wherever I could make a difference.

That same sense of purpose is one of the reasons I decided to run for the Cave Creek Unified School District Governing Board. With my son beginning his senior year, my time in PTO leadership will soon come to an end, but my commitment to students, families, teachers, and the district remains strong. Over the years, I have seen the district face declining enrollment and limited financial resources. I hope to bring a thoughtful, student-centered perspective, ask meaningful questions, and better understand district processes, data, job roles, and opportunities for improvement.

I know there will be difficult choices ahead, but I believe students must remain the priority. In education, the student is the reason the system exists. Every decision should be measured by how it supports students, strengthens classrooms, and helps teachers do their best work.

My goal is to continue listening to parents, educators, and community members. I understand parents’ frustrations because I have experienced my own, but I also know CCUSD has amazing teachers and staff. Over the years, I have built meaningful connections with many of them, and I deeply value the work they do for our children.

I believe every student deserves the opportunity to fully participate in school life, every parent deserves to feel heard, and every community benefits when people choose to get involved. Those beliefs continue to guide me today and inspire the work I do both professionally and personally.
